Outreach Event Ideas

NOTE FROM JONATHAN: I think one of the best ways we can point to Christ is through "acts of service." I'm not talking about handing out tracks or "door knocking"... I'm talking about good ol' fashion helping people in need. And if people ask why, we simply answer, "Because that's what Jesus would have done, and we're pretty excited about Jesus."

Trick or Treat Blessing
Each year, we begin by asking our church members to donate bags of individually wrapped candies around the beginning of October. At a meeting before Halloween, we divide the candy into goodie bags and print a Scripture passage on them. Then on Halloween night, we meet at the church in our costumes (nothing too scary) and proceed to a local hospital to pass out candy to the kids (and adults) who spend Halloween in the hospital. As we leave each child’s or adult’s room, we offer to pray for them.

We started out just visiting the kids, but quickly realized that while the adults may or may not want candy, it puts big smiles on their faces to see all the costumes and to receive prayer. We usually follow up our hospital visits with a lock-in event full of games, fun, and praise so that we can share our stories about the evening.

NOTE: Make sure you get the hospital’s permission before attempting this just so they know and are OK with the idea.

I'm stealing this idea! Instead of just receiving and getting, we can be giving to others and blessing people on Halloween.

I have a perfect backyard for a "spook-walk", so my own gradeschool-aged children pass out invitations to our house and for a specified hour, neighborhood children are invited to walk through our "extravaganza". My Junior High students then put this "spook-walk" on by coming up with gross but funny things for the children to feel, a little crawl-space for squeeze through, and the like. Our rules are that no one walks away afraid, but that the children have a great and safe time, and that our JH teens "help" the kids in this way. While we're still "doing" Halloween,we're diong it in a way that's safe, fun, funny, light-hearted, and encouraging. At the end we give out candy and Jesus-types of carnival things. Last year we had over 75 kids go through.
